As technology, security and business requirements continue to evolve, organizations need to be flexible related to computing platforms. New technologies are increasingly only available as a cloud-based SaaS/PaaS offering. At the same time, data and security policies and regulations may restrict where that data can reside. Increasing hardware and software costs combined with supply-chain issues and budget constraints can also drive organizations to look for alternatives to managing their own infrastructure.
NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) defines cloud computing as a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.
